L'Intrattenimento

Memento Audere Semper

Glass Beach is a protected beach, but not for its natural beauty. Located just outside of Fort Bragg, California it became an illegal dumping ground for residents in the late nineteenth century who lacked any kind of refuse pickup. It wasn’t until 1967 that the illegal dump was finally closed by city leaders and the local water board. The beach was cleaned of large refuse, but small pieces of glass and plastic that had been worn down by the elements remain, giving the beach its name and its unusual beauty.

Original Kuniaki II (1835 - 1888) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestler in a Butterfly Kimono

Comments- Great full-length portrait of a sumo wrestler wearing an olive green coat over a purple kimono bordered with butterflies. He stands clutching one hand at his side, smiling slightly as he looks to the right, his large figure filling the page. The inset behind him shows the rooftops of the city against a pale blue sky. A handsome design with soft shading in the background.

Artist - Kuniaki II (1835 - 1888)
Image Size - 9 1/2” x 13 1/2”

“Sumo Wrestler in a Butterfly Kimono” There is no irony in that at all. - TSM
